Solitude Aeturnus is an American epic doom metal band from Arlington, Texas, founded by guitarist John Perez in 1987. The band has released six studio albums. Their original name, Solitude, was changed to Solitude Aeturnus to pay homage to Black Sabbath and Candlemass, both of which have songs titled "Solitude."
The band's vocalist, Robert Lowe, was also the singer for the doom metal band Candlemass from 2007 to 2012. Former drummer and bassist Lyle Steadham later became the guitarist and lead vocalist for the band Ghoultown.
Solitude Aeturnus formed after John Perez left his previous thrash metal band Rotting Corpse. Interested in a doom metal sound influenced by early 1980s groups such as Witchfinder General, St. Vitus, Black Hole, and Nemesis, Perez assembled musicians including Brad Kane (drums), Kris Gabehardt (vocals), Tom Martinez (guitar), and Chris Hardin (bass). The band recorded a five-song demo titled "And Justice for All…" in January 1988, before Metallica released their album of the same name. The band initially performed under the name Solitude and changed it to Solitude Aeturnus two years later.
After initial local performances, the band lineup stabilized in late 1988 with Perez (guitar), Robert Lowe (vocals), Edgar Rivera (guitar), Lyle Steadham (bass), and John "Wolf" Covington (drums). This lineup lasted until 1996. Steadham initially played drums before switching to bass after Hardin’s departure.
Their two-song demo featuring "Mirror of Sorrow" and "Opaque Divinity" attracted the independent label King Klassic. In January 1990, they recorded their debut album, "Into the Depths of Sorrow," at Dallas Sound Lab for \$3,000 over seven days. Although completed in 1990, the album faced release delays until July 1991 when Roadrunner Records picked it up. No tours followed its release, but new material was already prepared.
The band recorded their second album, "Beyond the Crimson Horizon," in March 1992 at Sound Logic Studios with a larger budget, resulting in improved sound quality. Released in July 1992, it was followed by a successful six-week U.S. tour with Paul Di'Anno’s band Killers in late 1992. In February 1993, Solitude Aeturnus was dropped from Roadrunner Records and signed with Pavement Records in December of that year.
Seeking a fresh environment, the band recorded their third album, "Through the Darkest Hour," in March 1994 at Rhythm Studios in England. The album featured a simpler, heavier style and was released in August 1994 to positive reviews. The band then toured the U.S. with Mercyful Fate and Europe with Revelation. After the tours, they took a break until April 1996. During this period, Perez founded his own label, Brainticket Records, and released a solo album under The Liquid Sound Company.
The fourth album, "Downfall," was recorded in Dallas, Texas. Although it received favorable reviews, the band expressed dissatisfaction with its production quality. Shortly after, Lyle Steadham left the band to form the punk band The Killcreeps. Temporary bassist Teri Pritchard joined for a European tour in April 1996 with Morgana Lefay. Following this, Steve Moseley replaced Steadham as bassist, and the band parted ways with Pavement Records.
In December 1997, Solitude Aeturnus signed with German label Massacre Records and recorded their fifth album, "Adagio," in March 1998 at Rhythm Studios. The album was released in June 1998, and the band toured Europe with Saviour Machine in September. "Adagio" was released in the U.S. in January 1999 through Olympic Records, distributed by Polygram, providing the band with greater exposure in their home country.
The band went on hiatus in 2011 and reunited in 2023, announcing a performance at the Hell's Heroes festival scheduled for March 2024.
