8ULENTINA - Mix For The Astral Plane
It’s a futile exercise to try and pick a favorite among the 43 mixes we’ve released this year through The Astral Plane, but I’ve come back to 8ULENTINA’s over and over again, especially when a shot of energy is needed in the morning. The accompanying interview is a must read as well.
The Los Angeles “underground” was derided by many this year for its prohibitive cost ($25/head entry, $6 Tecates), abusive security and racial homogeneity, but Muñeka, Foreigner and Kelman Duran’s Rail Up parties were a true ray of light in a sea of mediocrity. Guests like NA, Dubbel Dutch and Moro all provided moments, but it’s the resident’s unique handle on dancehall, reggaeton, kuduro and baile funk sounds that has made each party move. Their NTS show is going to be a must listen.
2016 saw PTP expand well beyond the confines of the club with key releases coming from Eaves, N-Prolenta, ssaliva, Flora Yin-Wong and 0coumeups. The latter’s heartbreaking One Deep has been on repeat since its release in September, a tender, brutal episode and a welcome return for the Londoner formerly known as DYNOOO.
If you weren’t eagerly waiting for each and every transmission from Alkaline this year I don’t what you were doing.
Mhysa - Thot Fantasy
Femme strength from SCRAATCH’s Mhysa featuring Cardi B, Klein, Kash Doll and more likeminded voices. Thot Fantasy II, originally made for Nkisi's NTS show, came a few months later and is equally worth your time.
