Black Top

Black Top

Black Top was first played on NTS on 12 April 2021. Songs played include Some Good News.

Black Top, the duo of multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson and pianist Pat Thomas, is a shape-shifting unit dedicated to exploring the intersection between live instruments and lo-fi technology. Their virtuoso, freely improvised performances combine twisted loops, samples and dub-effects, which draw on their Afro-Caribbean roots, with a spontaneity and daring rooted in experimental free-jazz.

Each in the series is moulded by the contributions of a unique guest collaborator.

Black Top is a smoking blues rock trio with a rock'n'roll attitude from Arnhem, Netherlands. Singer bass player Martin van Hills completed the trio in 2013 with new comers Elmer Meijers on guitars and Roger Bourbon on drums. With two young guns he plays the songs from the two succesfull albums Rough 'n Gritty and Sour Milk and ads some traditionals. Black Top has an original take on blues rock and plays classic rock songs with respect for the tradition.

The Dutch based Black Top came onto the scene with the debut album Rough 'n Gritty in 2008. The album got good reviews and was distributed world wide. The band build a following and earned the reputation of being a great live act. The trio presented the second album Sour Milk at a sold out Paradiso Amsterdam, which is one of the most prestegious venues in the Netherlands.

Black Top plays mostly original material and ads songs from bands such as ZZ Top and AC/DC.
