The only woman director associated with the French New Wave movement of the late '50s, Agnès Varda's style of directing has been lauded for its introspective, personal approach. She referred to her own methods of filmmaking as cinécriture - or "writing on film" - with a closer synchronicity between the roles of cinematographer, screenwriter, and director. Her films were noted for their use of non-professional actors and location shooting during periods where sound technology meant most directors preferred to shoot indoors. Her subject matter tended towards the marginalised: she chose to direct a documentary on The Black Panthers after seeing Huey Newton had been arrested for killing a police officer. This episode of Sounds on Screen looks back at the musical universe of Agnès Varda's singular vision in European post-war cinema. Produced for NTS by 150 Session.
