Gabriel Suovanen born in Stockholm and studied singing at the Sibelius Academy in 1993-94 . He first appeared as Conte Almaviva in Mozart‘s Marriage of Figaro at the Opera Studio of the Sibelius Academy, as Sid in Britten‘s Albert Herring at the Copenhagen Royal Opera and as Guglielmo in Mozart‘s Così fan tutte in a production by the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg.
Besides Gabriel Suovanen has won several prizes in distinguished singing competitions, including the Timo Mustakallio singing competition, the International Mirjam Helin Singing Competition and the first Karita Mattila Award. In 1997-98 Gabriel Suovanen was appointed „Soloist of the year“ by the Swedish National Radio and subsequently appeared in several radio concerts and studio recordings with orchestra and as soloist. In the season 1998-99 he was engaged in several productions at the Stockholm Royal Opera, among them Fiorillo in The Barber of Seville and Silvio in I Pagliacci. Suovanen made his debut at the Finnish National Opera as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Valentin in Gounod‘s Faust and at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie as Morales in Carmen.
In the summer of 2000 Gabriel Suovanen sang the title role in Tuomas Kantelinen‘s opera Paavo Nurmi, performed at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. The same year he returned to the Finnish National Opera as Marcello in La Bohème. In 2001 he sang the title role in Eugen Onegin at the Tampere Opera and debuted at the Liceu Opera in Barcelona as Donald in Britten‘s opera Billy Budd. He returned to Barcelona in autumn 2001 singing Schaunard in Puccini’s La Bohème. In the 2001-02 season he sang Bello at the new production of La fanciulla del west at the Finnish National Opera and in fall 2002 he visited Norwegian Opera singing Marcello.
From 2002-05 Gabriel Suovanen joint the ensemble of the Komische Oper Berlin where he sang Don Fernando, Papageno, Don Giovanni and Eugen Onegin. Recent engagements include Pang in Turandot at the Savonlinna Festival in 2003-04 and two world premiers: Rasputin by Einojuhani Rautavaara in autumn 2003 in Helsinki alongside with Matti Salminen and Kundler’s Kastrat at the Royal Swedish Opera Stockholm in June 2004.
He recently sang Yeletsky (Pique Dame) and Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) in Helsinki, Eugen Onegin at the Komische Oper Berlin. Upcoming engagements include Kullervo (Kullervo) by Aulis Sallinen in Bern, Papageno at the Savonlinna Operfestival and Eugen Onegin at the Finnish National Opera.
In addition to his progressing opera career, Gabriel Suovanen also enjoys performing Lied and concert works and appears regularly with major symphony orchestras in Sweden and Finland. His future concert engagements include among others concert performances of Schumann’s Genoveva in Helsinki and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem with Vladimir Ashkenazy and Barbara Bonney in San Francisco. Recordings of Gabriel Suovanen are available on the Finnish Ondine label.
