Daniel Lencina

Daniel Lencina

Daniel Lencina has been played on NTS in shows including El Humo Mundial con Sonido Martines, featured first on 31 July 2022. Songs played include Negro en Sol Menor and Triste.

Daniel Lencina was born on 17th, 1938, in the Uruguayan town of Fray Bentos. He started his music career as a trumpet player when, at age 20, joined the Hot Blowers, a band comprised of Argentine and Uruguayan musicians. With this band, Lencina toured the Southern Cone until he settled down in Chile in 1972.

In Chile, Lencina built up a career playing on prestigious clubs and venues, both with the best musicians in the Chilean jazz scene and as a soloist mainly for TV shows. Many jazz players in the Chilean scene held him in the highest regard, from Giovanni Cultrera to Federico Dannemann, both of which shared the stage with him. He held the position of best trumpet player in Chile until Cristián Cuturrufo showed up during the 90's and marked himself as the newest trumpeter pursuing a solo career instead of remaining a big band member. Cuturrufo's aggressive bop contrasted heavily with Lencina's swing.

Daniel Lencina continued to perform during the 2000's, sharing the stage with characters like Fabiola Moroni, Christian Galvez and Valentín Trujillo. His health condicions showed wear and tear when he suffered a heart attack in 2009. Although he managed to recover, in 2016 he suffered pulmonary fibrosis, which would finally kill him the following year at age 79.
