Jag Panzer is an American power metal band from Colorado Springs, Colorado, formed in late 1981. Influenced by the new wave of British heavy metal, the original lineup featured Harry Conklin on vocals, Mark Briody on guitar, John Tetley on bass, and Rick Hilyard on drums. Initially named Tyrant, the band changed their name due to the existence of another band with the same name. They adopted the name Jag Panzer, inspired by the German World War II tank destroyer Jagdpanzer, modifying the spelling by dropping the letter "D" for easier pronunciation.
In their early years, the band performed locally in the Denver club scene and recorded an EP in 1983 later known as "Tyrants." Joey Tafolla joined as a guitarist in 1984, and they recorded their debut album, "Ample Destruction," released in August 1984 by the independent label Azra Records. The album gained underground success in the United States and was available as an import in Europe and Japan.
After moving to Southern California, Tafolla left the band in 1986 to pursue a solo career. Conklin briefly joined Riot before forming Titan Force. Following these departures, Briody and Tetley continued Jag Panzer by recruiting vocalist Bob Parduba and guitarist Christian Lasegue. Drummer Rikard Stjernquist joined, and the band recorded a second album in 1987, which was not officially released.
The band reunited in 1994 with vocalist Daniel J. Conca, releasing "Dissident Alliance" through the German indie label Rising Sun. Subsequent albums included "The Fourth Judgement" (1997) and "Age of Mastery" (1998), both released on Century Media. Jag Panzer released "Thane to the Throne," a concept album based on Shakespeare's "Macbeth," followed by "Mechanized Warfare" in 2001. In 2003, they released "Decade of the Nail Spiked Bat," a double album featuring unreleased tracks and remixed older material. "Casting the Stones" came out in 2004, alongside a limited edition release of the previously unreleased album "Chain of Command."
In 2008, guitarist Chris Broderick left to join Megadeth and was replaced by Christian Lasegue. The band announced their next album, "The Scourge of the Light," which was released in March 2011. It reached number 117 on the Billboard New Artist Chart, marking their most commercially successful album. Later that year, Jag Panzer announced they would disband due to rising touring costs but played several reunion shows in Europe, including a festival headline in Germany in 2014.
High Roller Records released a vinyl box set titled "Historical Battles – The Early Years" in 2013, limited to 500 copies. By 2014, Jag Panzer was working on a tenth album, with Joey Tafolla returning as lead guitarist. In 2015, Harry Conklin rejoined the band. "The Deviant Chord" was announced and released in September 2017 by SPV/Steamhammer. The album includes a cover of the Irish folk song "Foggy Dew."
