The Samadhi Quintet is led by drummer and composer Sam Gardner, whose skittering rhythms dance in and around the melodies and patterns produced by the group as he and his cohorts apply their considerable talents to probe the structured numerical systems of rhythm found in Indian classical music and the pinpoint precision grooves and rich harmonic progressions of hip-hop. With influences spanning modern artists including Kendrick Scott Oracle, Terence Blanchard, J Dilla, Ohbliv, Dil Withers and Pop Tart Pete among many others, Samadhi Quartet offer a world of rich rewards to the open-minded listener.
‘The Dance of Venus’, the debut album of the Quintet, is a phonographic celebration of life, consciousness and the universe and the group explore the role of meditation and still consciousness in music. The album is inspired by the Quadrivium – the four Liberal Arts of Number, Geometry, Music and Cosmology, studied from antiquity as a means to perceive the beautiful numerical order that characterizes the universe. They combined the rhythms of Indian and Latin American music with the beats of hip hop and the language of jazz to create a truly unique sound. The album will be released by the critically acclaimed F-IRE Label (home to previous Mercury Awards nominees Basquiat Strings and Roller Trio) on 16 March 2015. The band has received a Jazz Services National Touring Support Scheme grant for their new tour.
