Angélica Castelló

Angélica Castelló

Angélica Castelló has been played on NTS in shows including Lung Dart, featured first on 30 January 2023. Songs played include Krikaya and Disturbio (Bicho I).

Angélica Castelló was born in Mexico City in 1972 into a family of non-musicians but music lovers… especially the music of the Beatles. She started playing the recorder at the age of 8 in the primary school "Maestro Fausto Bravo Gomez" with maestra Irma, the repertoire of the first 4 years was the Mexican National Hymn and "La Vikina"- with both pieces the whole music band (30 recorders approx.) did several competitions against other primary schools and as far as she remembers they didn't win any of them.

At the age of fourteen she decided to study recorder at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música de México and some months later she knew she would want to be a musician after listening to a record of Bach flute sonatas.

Ms. Castelló started her musical formation studying recorder with Horacio Franco and flute with Marielena Arizpe at the Conservatorio de Música de México. Besides learning instruments and theoretical subjects she had the chance to sing intensively in choirs and her group of friends was a gang of composers and conductors who were in intense contact with contemporary music as well.

In 1990 her family decided to emigrate to Montréal, Canada where she continued her recorder studies at the Université de Montréal with Francis Colpron. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in 1994.

From 1994 to 1996 she worked playing medieval, modern and pop music on the streets, in restaurants, parties, festivals, churches, concert halls and living rooms and working with musicians from the most diverse backgrounds.

From 1996 till 1999 Angélica Castelló did postgraduate studies in Amsterdam with her teacher Paul Leenhouts. From then on her direction in music started to focus more and more on contemporary music, improvisation, experimentation, and work with young composers.

Since 1999 she has been living, teaching, organising and carrying out musical experiments in Austria, working together with composers, performers, theater, visual/video artists, improvisers, cooks, painters, writers and other different, difficult-to-define, type of art expressions.

Active member of the ensembles Low Frequency Orchestra, Los Autodisparadores, Fiori Musicali and grill/castello, in 2004 she iniciated and still organises the concert series 'Neue Musik in St. Ruprecht' in Vienna and is interested in bringing new experimental and electronic music in churches.

As a soloist or as member of different ensembles, she performed ancient and modern music in Mexico, Canada, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, England and Austria. She obtained grants from Mexico (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes) and Canada (Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Canada).
