A pioneer in the distinctly Japanese sonics of "environmental" sound design, composer Takashi Kokubo began his solo career in the early 1980s, making synthesizer compositions inspired by classical music in the vein of fellow Japanese composer Isao Tomita, but across the following decades, his productions would pay deep homage to the sounds of the natural world and its spiritually soothing properties – as both inspiration for his music, and as a prominent feature in the music itself.

Jonny From Space

Jonny From Space

Jonny From Space has been played on NTS over 20 times, featured on 24 episodes and was first played on 16 August 2022.

Jonny From Space is the alias of Jonathan Trujillo, a Miami-based producer, DJ, and co-founder of Impacto. With two EPs on Omnidisc and several self-released projects, he recently unveiled his debut solo LP, titled 'back then I didn't but now I do', under the label Incienso. Trujillo's musical journey explores loping drum loops, warbling synth lines, sun-streaked pads, and ambient voices, creating a sonic landscape that delves into the depths of a humid, atmospheric world. Described by the artist as "built 2 chill," the album seamlessly transitions between ambient, downtempo, and dub techno, capturing the essence of a tranquil afternoon spent watching clouds drift through the sky.

As a resident DJ at Miami's renowned Club Space, Jonny From Space showcases versatility in his musical repertoire. Rooted in the leftfield legacy of local acts like Phoenecia and the Schematic label, his performances at the intimate Floyd club often feature collaborations with like-minded artists such as Ben UFO and fellow Florida DJ Danny Daze. Despite his roots, Trujillo's adaptability was showcased when he opened for EDM icons Diplo and Carnage during Super Bowl weekend, demonstrating his ability to navigate diverse musical landscapes.

Over the past few years, Jonny From Space has curated a diverse discography, blending cosmically inclined club-focused tracks with more introspective, ambient compositions. His debut album, 'back then I didn't but now I do', released under Jenny Slattery and Anthony Naples’ Incienso imprint, leans into his introspective instincts, featuring measured tempos and feathery textures. The record presents a unique balance, with wispy atmospheres juxtaposed against tough and resilient drum patterns, creating a captivating sonic experience.

The album's opening track, "Crystal Eyes," sets a downtempo tone with dubbed-out boom-bap and dreamy pads reminiscent of mid-'90s trip-hop. Throughout the record, Trujillo weaves knotty machine beats with gauzy synths and glowing haloes, creating an intricate yet soothing auditory experience. His production method, described as spacing out and working on drums until a locked groove is achieved, is evident in tracks like "Live" and "Slip," where off-kilter clicks and moody hip-hop instrumentals showcase his meticulous craftsmanship.

While 'back then I didn't but now I do' predominantly explores ambient and downtempo realms, Trujillo doesn't shy away from dancefloor influences. Tracks like "Dream Reality" and "Luna Dance" infuse brittle jungle breaks and dub techno elements, offering a dynamic contrast to the album's overall ethereal atmosphere. One of the standout tracks, "Float," embodies Jonny From Space's paradoxical approach, blending tight metallic coils with nebulous and pastel tones, creating a multifaceted electronic music experience that seamlessly oscillates between potent club tracks and ethereal ambient compositions.
