Bill Spencer shares weekend recordings from his living room studio in Detroit, Michigan, from where he brings a range of soulful jazz rock, and ambient sounds, spanning to electronica and psychedelic dub.

This mix explores the joy that’s produced by what is sustained - through guitar pedals, drones, drum patterns, feedback, and distortion. It finds hope bubbling up from a variety of genres and noise patterns - from shoegaze, to drum and bliss, to blackgaze and experimental. These sounds encourage us to hold on, to keep applying pressure, and to stay with what might at first sound hard.

Renegade Soundwave

Renegade Soundwave has been played on NTS over 60 times, featured on 63 episodes and was first played on 16 May 2014.

Renegade Soundwave (aka RSW) was a London based electronic music group formed in 1986 and disbanded in 1995. During their nine year career they released four long playing albums and twelve singles.

They were equally well known for their skill as producers and re-mixers of songs by others as they were for their own music. The two core members were Danny Briottet and Gary Asquith, both former members of Mass. Karl Bonnie was a founding member but quit in 1990 after the release of their debut album. Asquith had also previously served with early 4AD signing, Rema-Rema.

Their early singles mixed together the sound of dance culture, East-end hip-hop and a dash of electro-industrial noise. Later singles such as Biting my Nails and The Phantom were early dance floor classics, however their only UK Top 40 hit was Probably a Robbery which reached number 38 in the UK singles chart in 1990.
