Lil' Kim is the blueprint for the contemporary woman rap superstar. London-based singer/songwriter Polly Scattergood blends progressive arrangements and dynamic vocals with dark and ethereal electronic pop. Emerging in 2001, Scattergood made a strong first impression with her eponymous Mute-issued debut, which paired confessional, melodic folk-rock with shimmering electro-dance-pop. Subsequent efforts Arrows (2013) and In This Moment (2020) added ambient indie pop and somber, introspective synth pop to her increasingly diverse array of storytelling vehicles.
A native of Essex and a graduate of the Brit School, the London performing arts academy that spawned the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Katie Melua, Scattergood inked a deal with Mute at the age of 22 and released her first single, "Nitrogen Pink," in 2007. Her eponymous full-length debut arrived two years later and drew comparisons to artists like Kate Bush and Björk. She issued her sophomore effort, Arrows, in 2013, which was produced by Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós) and garnered acclaim both at home and abroad. In 2020, after a seven-year absence that saw Scattergood, among other things, becoming a mother for the first time, she released the meditative In This Moment, which skillfully combined elements of art rock, inward-looking ambient synth pop, and surging dance-pop.
