Janet Russell (born in Buckhaven, Fife, on 11 January 1958) is a Scottish folk singer and guitarist (and aunt of musician Elsa Jean McTaggart). As well as solo recordings, she recorded as Janet Russell & Christine Kydd (in the 1980s and 90s) and as a member of Sisters Unlimited.
Russell began her career singing in the folk clubs of Edinburgh and went on to support a number of major artists at the Edinburgh Folk and Fringe Festivals from 1980-1983. She performed and recorded as Janet Russell & Christine Kydd, including performing on "Folk on 2" for the BBC, in the 1980s and 90s.
Russell’s first solo outing was "Gathering the Fragments", released in 1988 on Harbourtown Records. Her “Secretary’s Song” was the most requested song on the BBC's “Folk on 2” radio programme in 1987/8, and “Breastfeeding Baby in the Park” has been taken up by the pro-breastfeeding lobby nationally and internationally.
Russell continues to perform, including as a member of Sisters Unlimited.
