José Evangelista

José Evangelista has been played on NTS in shows including Tafelmusik w/ Francesco Fusaro, featured first on 31 August 2024. Songs played include Travaux Et Jeux de Gravite.

José Evangelista (born 1943, Valencia, Spain) is a Spanish composer, who moved to Montréal, Canada, in 1970. There he studied composition with André Prévost and Bruce Mahler. His works composed after 1982 are characterized by monodic writing, that is without the use of harmony or counterpoint. This feature often gives his compositions a ritual quality and a non-western, more Asian flavour. His probably most well-known work is Ô Bali (1988), inspired by Balinese gamelan music. Other works include Clos de Vie (1983), a memorial piece for Canadian composer Claude Vivier, Piano Concertant for piano and orchestra (1987) and Monodías Españolas for piano solo (1988).
