Delphine Dora

Delphine Dora

Delphine Dora has been played over 40 times on NTS, first on 25 July 2014. Delphine Dora's music has been featured on 46 episodes.

Delphine Dora is a composer and improviser, singer-songwriter from France. Mainly known as pianist, the voice is one of her main instruments: setting texts and poems (Walt Whitman, Sylvia Plath, Kathleen Raine or Ingeborg Bachmann, etc.) to voice and music, ancestral sketches sung in an imaginary language, vocal work in relation to space, interest in spoken voices… Her iconoclastic music can be read as a personal mapping work, based on an intuitive approach to composition and nourished by numerous approaches (plural, sensory, poetic, experimental) in various aesthetics : songwriting, free improvisation, sound collage, electro-acoustic composition, field recordings…Since a decade, she has actively developed an unpredictable work, consisting of about more than twenty records released on French and foreign labels (three:four records (FR/Switzerland), meakusma (Be), Feeding Tube Records (USA), Okraïna (Be), Fort Evil Fruit (Irl), Was Ist Das? (USA), Bezirk (England), etc.), many of which have received critical acclaim, such as Eudaimon or L’inattingible, that was her most ambitious record to date, which was composed entirely in French with 14 musicians from around the world with about thirty instruments : organs, various keyboards sounds, synthesizer, woodwinds, strings, etc…

In addition to her solo work, she has worked and collaborated – episodically or regularly – on records and/or concerts with many French musicians: Mocke (guitar), Eloïse Decazes (voice), Bruno Duplant (double bass, field recordings), Gilles Deles (guitar, drums), Mathias Dufil (guitar…), Cathy Heyden (saxophone) and foreign musicians from the experimental scene: Sophie Cooper (trombone), Alessandro Bosetti (vocals), Andrew Chalk, Wolf Eyes (electronics, vocals), le fruit vert (synthesizer, organ, field recordings, electronics), etc. She has also participated in performance projects (musical readings with writers Charles Robinson, Dana Hilliot or with video artist, curator, geographer and poet Amy Cutler), collaborated with french essayist Pacôme Thiellement, did sound-drawing performances projected with author-illustrator for youth Elis Wilk. She has also worked in collaboration with filmmaker and director Michel Zumpf on music for his next film.

In 2012, she founded the label Wild Silence where she released about twenty records for her solo work or the work of other French and foreign musicians working in aesthetics ranging from folk to ambient, from free improvisation to experimental music : Monte Isola, Ensemble0, Mami Wata, Richard Moult, Cristian Alvear, Lodz, Powerdove, Thollem McDonas, etc. She has performed in France and Europe in places such as Cafe OTO (London), Brotfabrik (Frankfurt), Instants Chavirés (Montreuil), Cave12 (Geneva), Ausland (Berlin), Ateliers Claus (Brussels), EACC – Espai d’art contemporain de Castelló (Spain), Le Périscope (Lyon), Galerie de l’Art du Temps / Chapelle de l’Oratoire (Clermont-Ferrand), and festivals such as Le Guess Who / invited by Julia Holter (Netherlands), Fanø Free Folk Festival (DK), Supernormal Festival (UK), Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Denmark). Her musical work is regularly broadcast on many independent radio stations around the world: NTS, WFMU, Radio Campus, etc
