Santa Ratniece (born in 1977) is a Latvian composer.
She graduated J. Vitols Latvia Academy of Music in musicology (2000) and in composition (2002). At 2002 she was taking the composition studies with English composer David Rowland at Enschede Conservatory in Netherlands. In 2002 she began her Master's studies at Estonia Academy of Music and Theatre with Estonian composer Helena Tulve, in 2007 gained Master's Degree of Arts.
With her music Santa Ratniece has participated in music festivals, such as ARENA Festival, Skaņu Mežs, Latvian New Music Days, Introvert Music festival (Latvia), Estonian Music Days, Autumn Festival (Estonia), Présences 2006, Tenso Days Paris 2007 (France), Klangspuren 2006 (Austria), The Baltic Sea festival (Sweden), MusiMars (Canada), ISCM World Music Days 2008, GAIDA 2009, Music of Changes 2011 (Lithuania), Tenso Dagen Amsterdam 2009, Koorbiënnale Haarlem 2011 (The Netherlands), 2010 ISCM World New Music days Sydney (Australia), La Biennale di Venezia 2010 (Italy), Usedomer Music festival 2010 (Germany), SOCO festival 2011 (Uruguay), Vale of Glamorgan festival of music 2011 (United Kingdom), ULTIMA Oslo Contemporary music festival 2011 (Norway) and in various concerts in Switzerland, Argentine, Belgium, USA and elsewhere.
Music by Santa Ratniece has been played by Latvian Radio Choir, Sinfonietta Riga, Altera Veritas, Ensemble NOVE, pianists Elizabete Šīrante, Reinis Zariņš (Latvia), NYYD Ensemble, Ensemble Resonabilis, pianist Kadri-Ann Sumera (Estonia), Deutsch-Skandinavische Jugend-Philharmonie, Ensemble Reflexion K (Germany), Arditti Quartet, organist Charles Matthews (England), Nederlands Kamerkoor (The Netherlands) Quatuor Molinari (Canada), Sydney Symphony Fellows (Australia), The Crossing Chamber choir (USA) and others.
In Santa Ratniece's music, a study of sound qualities as well as possibilities for its interpretation, combined with an abandonment to intuition and poetic perception of the world, transport the listener into the world of archetypes, the most ancient cultural layers, and almost physically tangible sonic substance, or micro-worlds of sound. She studies sound practically under the microscope. But such a close inspection harmonizes very naturally with those processes whose sonic nature Santa's music invites us to imagine – be it a stalactites thousand-year-long growth in string quartet “Aragonite”, or the quite glimmering of pearls in “sens nacre”. These experiments with sound often conjure up almost “tangible” visions - always marvelously beautiful (Inara Jakubone).
Santa Ratniece received several awards for her music in Latvia (Infinity Award 2011, 2007, DIENA Latvian Annual Reward in Culture in 2006) and elsewhere (Shant Nadi - recommended work in 2012 International ROSTRUM for composers, Saline - recommended work in 2008 International ROSTRUM for composers, Sens nacre for ensemble – selected work in 2004 International ROSTRUM for Composers, composers under 30 category)
