COTONOU
14:00 - 16:00

Based in Cotonou, Benin, which at the time was referred to as Dahomey, Albarika Records was founded by the French-born, Benin-based producer and entrepreneur, Emmanuel "Manu" Dibango, who had a significant influence on the local music scene. The label was instrumental in releasing records from some of the region's most prominent musicians during the golden age of African music. Many of the artists signed to Albarika Records were known for blending indigenous African rhythms with Western jazz, funk, and soul influences. This made their sound distinctive and part of a broader movement across West Africa during the 60s and 70s, as music became a form of social and political expression.

Lori Carson

Lori Carson

Lori Carson has been played on NTS shows including Trip Lick w/ James K, with Breathe first played on 12 February 2025.

Lori Carson is a singer/songwriter. She has released several solo albums, appeared on many soundtracks, and collaborated with The Golden Palominos. She performed lead vocals on the song "In the Middle of the Night" on French producer Hector Zazou's album Strong Currents. Soundtrack credits include the films Blue Car, Stealing Beauty, and Gone in 60 Seconds. These songs can be found on her compilation, entitled Stolen Beauty.

Lori Carson has a lot in common with Aimee Mann, but Lori has yet to get the attention that Aimee has. Everything is a moody, atmospheric album, but you can tell that she is holding back. Although Aimee sounds at home with her low-key rock, there's something in Lori's voice that says she wants to raise her voice above a whisper, but she can't quite do it. Her lyrics, though, are very personal and intense. "My first lover beat me black and blue. I was 15 years old. Couple of others, they were cheaters, too. But I never had nobody half as mean as you." It's that sort of writing that has made Lori's career, and that is Everything's strength.
