Composer Amanda Harberg’s upcoming commissions include new works for the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Sound All Around series and for the Dorian Wind Quintet. Recent commissions include Elegy for the Grand Rapids Symphony, Venus Unhinged for Albany Symphony’s Dogs of Desire, Concerto for Viola and Orchestra for violist Brett Deubner, Solis for University of Nevada Symphony Orchestra, and Feathers and Wax for flutist Julietta Curenton’s debut with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.

Her works have also been performed by ensembles including the Bay Atlantic Symphony, the National Symphony of Ecuador, the Thuringer Symphoniker, the American Modern Ensemble, the Olympia Philharmonic Society, the New Jersey Youth Symphony, the Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra, the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, the FAUST Youth Symphony, the Harmonium Choral Society and the New York Licorice Ensemble. Her music for flute and piano has been presented at two National Flute Conventions, and her new Sonata for Clarinet and Piano will be presented at the International Clarinet Assocation’s ClarinetFest 2016.

Harberg’s awards include the 2014 New Jersey State Council On the Arts Fellowship Award, a Fulbright/Hays Fellowship, two Meet the Composer Creative Connections grants, the New York Youth Symphony’s First Music Award, the Juilliard School’s Peter Menin Prize, a MacDowell Colony summer residency, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy's Outstanding Young Alumna Award, and grants from foundations including the Mellon Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts, a Live Music for Dance grant, and the New York State Music Teachers Association. As in-house composer for Common Good Productions, Harberg has also composed music for an award winning feature documentary, as well as documentaries on PBS and for the Teaching Channel.

Harberg’s music has been published by Theodore Presser Company and by C.L. Barnhouse. Her music has been recorded on Koch International, American Modern Recordings, Albany Records, Centaur Records and Walking Frog Records. Harberg’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra and her Elegy will both be recorded by Brett Deubner and the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra on the Naxos label in April, 2016.

Also an active teacher, Amanda Harberg has taught composition at Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program, Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Luzerne Music Center and the ASTA Chamber Music Institute, as well as maintaining an active private teaching studio since 1997. As a pianist, Harberg is the pianist for Piaclava, and performs frequently with her colleagues.

Harberg received her BM and MM from the Juilliard School where she studied with Stephen Albert, Robert Beaser and David Diamond, and where she was awarded the Peter Mennin Prize for outstanding accomplishment. A Philadelphia native, Harberg lives in Glen Ridge NJ with her family, where she is the founder and director of the Music in Montclair series.
