Pelican Daughters

Pelican Daughters

Pelican Daughters has been played on NTS over 30 times, featured on 31 episodes and was first played on 10 October 2015.

Pelican Daughters were founded by Justin Brandis and Andy Rantzen in 1984. Using a variety of instruments, found objects & DIY tape loops, the pair released a succession of cassette-only releases into Sydney music stores, inspired by the so-called New Underground movement of the early 80's, comprising post-industrial bands such as Severed Heads, Noctural Emissions, Bourbonese Qualk, Nurse With Wound, SPK, The Legendary Pink Dots, Esplendor Geometrico and many others.

Over the course of several cassette releases and live performances, including two cassette releases on CCP, the duo were joined by itinerant members Ben Fontaine, Andrew Holmes, James Fergus and Bryce Cannon. A chance connection led to 'Fishbones and Wishbones' (essentially a 'best-of' from the cassette years) and 'Bliss' being released by Kim Cascone's San Francisco label, Silent Records. 'Bliss' is heavily coloured by the dub effects, introduced at the mastering stage, of Anthony Maher, best known as the dub artist Sheriff Lindo and one-time member of The Loop Orchestra. Also featured on the album are three collaborations with Miriam Williamson of Jello Biafra-championed Sydney punk/dub/tribal group, Wrong Kind Of Stone Age, two of which found their way, in remixed form, on to early 90's releases by Sydney rave duo Itch-E and Scratch-E. Their ARIA award winning track, Sweetness and Light, began life as a Pelican Daughters track and features Miriam's distinctive vocal.

After the demise of Silent Records, Pelican Daughters recorded one more album with Sheriff Lindo, 'Darkness Before Light', but this found no release at the time. They also appeared on a number of compilation releases by Silent Records and Halcyon Records.

Andy Rantzen went on to co-found Sydney techno/rave outfit Itch-E and Scratch-E with Paul Mac. The duo's first EP, Irritable, features a number of remixed Pelican Daughters tracks. Andy Rantzen continues to release material under his own name and with electro/rock duo Cherry2000. Justin Brandis collaborates with diverse singer-songwriters & is co-founder of DaylanMusic, providing soundtracks for short films & TV projects.

In 2007, Sydney label 4-4-2 Music embarked on a project to rerelease the Pelican Daughters material, including Darkness Before Light, and other material from compilations. Subsequent rereleases will include solo and collaborative albums and eps from Andy Rantzen's back catalogue.
