[1] Matt Carlson is a composer and musician who is an active participant in the underground and experimental music scene of Portland, Oregon. His work is deliberately difficult to summarize; his numerous collaborations include modal electro-acoustic improvisation with Golden Retriever, orchestral arrangements and synthesizers with pop group Parenthetical Girls, sound installations, video soundtracks and performance art with Oregon Painting Society, long form freely improvised dance music with CexFucx, and reductionist electronic drones with Bonus. His solo music includes experimental song-form albums, dense electronic noise, atonal deconstructions of funk music, pretty rhythmic minimalism, and compositions for chamber music ensemble, string quartet and electronic instruments. He has toured North America and Europe, and performed in Portland at PICA's Time-Based Art festival in 2009 and '08, Vancouver's PUSH Festival, Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival, Barcelona's Primavera Sound Festival, and Vienna's Donaufestival. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where he studied composition with Jarrod Powell.
