''In the Western world, improvisation is a failure; you do it when something goes wrong. But when black people improvise it's a form of mastery.'' albacollective.com Art by Christopher Fodera

Blk w/Bear

Blk w/Bear

Blk w/Bear has been played on NTS shows including Love Drain, with Broken Ridge first played on 14 September 2016.

BLK w/ BEAR [Washington DC-based queer artist JS ADAMS] creates both temporal turntable installations and laptop compositions utilizing forced looping technique of altered vinyl recordings along with 'dead media' recording sources such as Mutoscope 'Voice-o-Graph' and Wilcox Gay 'Recordio' discs. His audio artworks also include manipulated voice synthesis and deconstructive turntablism.

BLK w/ BEAR has since grown to become a full-band effort of Adams [loops + prepared vinyl], Doug Poplin [cello + effects] and PD Sexton [bass + effects].

Live performances and studio recordings incorporate additional instrumentation from bassist RH BEAR of New York industrial-noise-rock band BILE. and video from Bad Hand Films, Renee Shaw aka VJ Poppins and Nick Lopata.

BLK w/ BEAR has garnered glowing reviews and international airplay for the thought-provoking and moving 'Wish for a World Without Hurt' collaboration with London's ROTHKO [2004 Outmusic Award nominee ‘Best Instrumental Album’] and 2004's limited edition 'fahrenheit_drafts' 12-inch single. Audio has accompanied film/video projects in NYC and London and selections from 'Wish for a World' were recently used in the Discovery Channel's poignant 'The Flight that Fought Back' docu/drama. The four-track Version 3 [2008] is available for download at the Long Division with Remainders '14 versions of the same EP' project site.

Adams also curates the annual QUEERING SOUND held each June before DC's GLBT pride festivities. The performances showcase alternative sound art, music and spoken word from local, national and international artisans through both live and digital contributions.
