Jennifer was born in 1967 in North London to German/English parents. As a young girl she was always singing, dancing, and performing at home for her family. It was difficult to shut her up! As a teenager she fell in love with disco, soul, funk, hip-hop and RnB, thanks to Tony Blackburn on Radio London. (Who remembers Tony’s famous 12 inchers??) She would regularly go to the Virgin Record Store on Tottenham Court Road to buy 12 inch vinyl exports from the US.
After leaving school at 16 she went on a Youth Training Scheme in order to get work experience at a record company, which she loved. However, in those days, it was difficult to actually get a job in the record industry, so she became a secretary/receptionist.
Via her friend Pip (Mr P), she heard that the 6th Form Economic students at Highgate Wood School were starting a one-off record label, and were looking for artists that lived in Haringey. Jennifer was then introduced to the talented Paul Curry who wrote the music and lyrics to many catchy 80’s style disco/pop songs. They recorded quite a few songs together.
Paul and Jennifer decided Miracles was the right track to put forward, and it got accepted onto the Soul of Haringey E.P. In 1986 The Soul of Haringey E.P. was released. A limited number of records were pressed, and it was sold within the Borough of Haringey.
Although music and singing was very much in Jennifer’s heart, she concentrated on her working career and lost touch with Paul Curry and Pip. She eventually moved to Holland, got married, and had a family.
Fast forward many years, a friend of Jennifer’s said her song Miracles had been posted on YouTube. Unfortunately, her surname was not spelt correctly, but she was thrilled that someone still had the E.P. and thought it good enough to publicly post. She contacted a few people that had left comments on YouTube and realised that many people loved that style of late 80’s home studio style music.
Via social media, people from all around the world contacted her asking if the record would be re-released and had she recorded any other material. Some of them were lucky enough to have a copy, and they had fun stories of how they had found the record. One E.P. had been found in a record shop in France. Last year, someone heard Jennifer’s song being played on a radio station in America! The craziest story was someone contacting Jennifer saying they had just bought the record from someone in Australia, and it had a message and her signature on the sleeve. It turned out that Jennifer’s cousin had inherited the record from her late uncle and they were hoping to get in contact with her. Thanks to this record sale, Jennifer is now in contact with her long lost relatives in Australia.
Music is still close to her heart. Jennifer has kept all her vinyl and has an extensive collection. She has sung with a world music choir, a church choir, and now with the Amstel Gospel Choir. She is still stuck in the 80’s & 90’s for her favourite music. She remains living in Holland and works at a private school as a marketing manager.
