The Fast Set
The Fast Set
The Fast Set has been played on NTS shows including Crossed Wires w/ Amanda Siegel, with Junction 1 first played on 13 August 2018.
The Fast Set was originally just electronics wizard David Knight. He released a 7" single featuring the original composition Junction 1 as well as a cover of T. Rex's Children of the Revolution on the B-side. This was the very first release on Axis Records, the label which went on to become the leading independent 4AD.
In early 1980 vocalist Marc Sebastian Jones and guitarist Peter Farrugia joined up with Knight to form a band. They were all primarily influenced by electronic artists such as Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, the glam pop of David Bowie, Roxy Music, Marc Bolan and dark post-punk acts such as Bauhaus and Joy Division. The sound they produced consisted of a lot of analogue synthesizers, doomy half-spoken vocals and heavily treated guitar.
Originally called 'Transition' they eventually decided upon continuing under the name Knight had used previously. The band recorded a demo tape and were signed by the 'futurist' DJ Stevo to his label 'Some Bizzare'. The Fast Set contributed another T. Rex cover, King Of The Rumbling Spires, to their label's 'Some Bizzare Album' compilation. The compilation also featured Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Blancmange and other (then) unknown groups.
Shortly after the release date, David and Peter parted company with Marc. Peter took over on vocals and they were later joined by Brad Day on drums.
