Samba is the joy expressed through the pain of living. Carnival is the expresion of joy that has come out uf hundreds of years of oppression, from slavery to prohibition, to the glorious rebellion against all of this and the JOY of expressing our culture and our faith! Songs dedicated to joy in carnival, to the icons that inspired carnivals, to the firm affirmation of Brazilian msuic’s African roots, to the communities and favelas that created the genre, to the protest songs that supported the movement of Carnaval and highlighted its importance. We feature drum rhythms and songs dedicated to the orixás, the backbone of this culture, and hear their echos through modern samba. And of course, some of the most iconic samba enredos that have led the legendary parades down the famous Avenida. Featuring a live recording on a bateria from the sambodrome itself, exclusive on this show. From the roots of recorded samba to the most modern incarnations of it, this is a voyage through the genre, a genre that breathes and heaves with joy. These tracks question inequality and reclaim the roots at the centre of this glorious genre - ending on an acoustic version of my samba school’s anthem that asks the questions : O Lord, O Lord, Has Slavery Truly Ended? —This is Carnaval, where Joy is Resistance.

Remote Control

Remote Control

Remote Control has been played on NTS shows including Midnight Marauders w/ Marshmello, with Breakout first played on 9 June 2018.

If you like Rachel Stamp then it's a shame because you're going to have to remove the album of its glistening glam rock crown and replace it with this electrifying piece of pop panache! Yes,Remote Control are another (yet welcome) band that generates glorious glam pop/rock that gives you no other choice but to abandon the baggy trousers for a night and reach for the eyeliner and feather boa! However, with this 5 star rated album in your record collection, you could listen to all the glitter tunes it has to offer from the comfort of your own home! The title of this album, 'Evil Rats On No Star Live' may be a palindrome of a mirrored image that represents the those who are 'locked in their lifestyles' but it really isn't as serious as that! The album tells a story about a young girl from a dysfunctional family who dreams of breaking free from her strenuous lifestyle to live out a life of rock'n'roll prominence yet even in her dreams she never is truly happy. (She obviously never owned this album!)The first track 'Paradise Syndrome' is one of the less effervescent glam tracks but is the bands gorgeous succesion at placid pop at its most perfect. 'The Electric Kind' is the stand-out track as you feel the shocks down your spine, "Heart skips to the sound of a beating drum"! This song follows with 'frail' and another stand-out track 'Fashion Police' which by this point, if you haven't realised this album is a glam rock masterpiece then this song is about to make you convinced! 'Metal Machine' is your sleazy glam anthem, "So your getting it on in your bedroom" and '1969' is making it very hard for you to dance to the electric beat in your stilettos while Ben John is singing that he listens to the sound of a "dead generation"! 'Starfucker' is taking you over as you sing and pout infront of the mirror only to be then calmed down by the beauty of 'Aliens'. Next your 'Electrified', another stimulating track that will have you singing along with Ben until the album reaches its final track 'Velveteen' and a great finale to the album and the story it is too! There maybe lots of glam rock bands around right now (King Adora, Mo-Ho-Bish-o-Pi, Gay Dad, Rachel Stamp..) but none of them sparkle, snarl and growl as much as this band, none are finer than Remote Control. It is tempting just to say if you like Rachel Stamp then definately buy this album but it wouldn't be doing RC any justice-BUY THIS ALBUM BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMPLY REMOTE CONTROL AND THEREFORE SIMPLY THE BEST!!! (And there's a bonus-not a single Tina Turner in sight!)
