Jacques Charlier

Jacques Charlier

Jacques Charlier has been played on NTS over 20 times, featured on 22 episodes and was first played on 14 November 2018.

Jacques Charlier (b. 1939, Liège, Belgium) is a self-taught artist who has been making biting, radically eclectic work since the early 1960s. His process is defined by his critical and humorous approach to society, the art world and the current clichés regarding the avant-garde. As a musician, Charlier performed with a punk group, Terril (never recorded), took inspiration from the minimalist sounds of Glass, Reich, La Monte Young, Cage, and Meredith Monk, performing psychoacoustic pieces throughout the 1970s. Charlier hit a creative stride in the 1980s—armed only with a synth, drum machine, fuzz box, and his custom guitar, with occasional duets with vocalist Martine Doutreleau. He recorded a trove of proto-pop tunes which he self-released on three cassettes (Musique Regressive, Chansons Idiotes and Chansons Tristes) between 1984–1987.
