In Iceland, Thomas Stankiewicz contemplates the constant flux of the elements. A composer & musician in his own right, he selectively weaves in between soundtracks, classical music, and evocative ambient sounds, symphonically unveiling untold stories from past and future… @tommmasi
There's an old Brian Eno quote that is inevitably referenced when talking about the Velvet Underground - something along the lines of "They only sold 30,000 copies of their first album, but everyone who bought the album started a band". It's slightly inaccurate (they sold a lot more copies), but the message is clear: few bands have had such an outsized, potent, and wide reaching effect on the musicians that followed in their footsteps. Their stubborn desire to continually approach songwriting from the left field, and continuous sonic reinvention reverberated for decades, influencing punk, post-punk, art rock, ambient music, even notably influencing real political revolution in Czechoslovakia. Two hours of The Velvets' best, selected and mixed by Claire Rousay.

There is more than one artist with this name:
1) A 60's Spanish band with singer Jeanette. 2) A Brazilian indie band.
2) Defining the music of PicNic is definitely not an easy task, but one can easily recognize the paradoxism, or, if one prefers, a certain kind of bi-polarity that lies in their songs: tenderness x energy, slow motion x full throttle, sweetness x power, violins x storming guitars; all this…feelings walk together since the first day. The fresh and new brazilian music, without preconceived paths to follow nor false ideals to be plannedeither; that´s PicNic, and vice-versa. Formed in 2001, the band gathers the rough touch of four boys (Paulinho- guitars; Miguel- guitars; Chokito bass guitar; Davi- drums) with the delicacy of their female singer, Guidi, who also plays the guitar and is the responsable for all the lyrics. Their first demo was released in 2003, and is unashamedly provincial and nostalgic. Eight tracks, low-fi, basic overdubs. Nonetheless, everything is there. "Talvez" (Maybe) opens with clean guitars, and invites ythe listener to a trip - or a picnic - in a bright sunny day, while "Ano Novo" ( New Year´s Day) and "Aqui" (Here) reminds:- that´s a rock band, do not be fooled! "Mexicana" (Mexican Song) is a nice chance to hear the band´s original drummer Victor screaming like a freak and developing a forful drum roll that still nowadays evokes comparisons with one the band influences, the Pixies. As soon as they released " Pic Nic", the group started playing in ALL underground stages of their hometown, Rio de Janeiro, and at the same time begun a massive network through music sites. Until the release of their second demo, "Pic Nic" has sold over 1500 copies all over the main cities of Brasil. "Feito em Casa" (Homemade), the second demo, was released in july, 2004, and it was well received by the band´s increasing audience and by the specialized press too. As the title suggests, it was whole home recorded, except the drums, which were recorded in a common studio. However, this album shows a brilliant post-production work, with complex textures and cutting, sharp guitars; the rythm section really kicks; and there are some innovative and strange noises here and there… "…bossa nova and Sonic Youth shaking hands in punk rock club!", someone wrote. With two clips on MTV, and over 2000 copies sold, "Feito em Casa" allowed the band to spread their message, and now they regularly tour all over the country, leving sold out shows and new fans in every single city they play. Rigth now they are preparingtheir official debut album, which will have songs collected from the two previous demos as well as a full pack of brand new songs. But, above all expectations, PicNic keeps in mind their original and only goal. To have fun. Like they always do.
