Chris Penny aka Cpen is not your average music producer. His strong musical background in jazz and funk has made him well known for sublime melodies and killer bass lines over the past 12 years. He is one of the key founders of the west coast deep house movement of the early 00’s . Cpen’s debut solo e.p. “ Pirate’s Life” was released on Seasons recordings in 2000 . The title track was licensed to Fabric’s first CD compilation with Craig Richards. He followed this up with highly acclaimed releases on OM Records, Naked Music , Glasgow Underground, Hudd Traxx , Nightshift and Robsoul to name but a few. Besides his solo work, Cpen has collaborated extensively with long time music partner and friend JT Donaldson as well as Lance De Sardi , Angel Alanis and DJ Colette with whom he wrote 2 songs in 2005 on her debut album “Hypnotized” (#1 on Billboard and i tunes Dance Charts). The title track “Hypnotized” was also featured on the soundtrack for the movie The Devil Wears Prada . Cpen’s remixes include the likes of Andy Caldwell, Jake Childs and Alexander East but he is perhaps best known for the 2004 Utensil Recordings single “Puffin Stuff ” with JT remix , which was featured on Fabric 21 DJ Heather and DJ Sneak House of OM . Cpen’s most recent work and collaborations can be seen as Mizfits (with Hipp-E) on Urban Tourque 2009 , as LDOE on Luke Solomon’s Classic Digital 2009 ,as well as the stellar release “Next to you” with JT on Bananza Recordings 2009. As a dj, Cpen can be heard playing only the highest caliber house music and his roots from the early 90’s clearly shine through in his sets. From LA to Nashville to Indonesia, Cpen is constantly making a name for himself behind the decks as well as on them.
