The Dameans

The Dameans

The Dameans has been played on NTS shows including Acid Memories w/ Astral Vibes, with Beginning Today first played on 22 January 2020.

The Dameans (pronounced DAY-mee-unz) were a quintet formed at Notre Dame University in 1967. Darryl Ducote, Gary Ault, Mike Balhoff, Dave Baker. and Buddy Cesar were all seminary students who wanted to modernize the liturgy.

They combined folk music with Catholicism, releasing a total of thirteen albums over their career. They played their own instruments on their debut album with Ducote, Cesar and Ault on guitar, Balhoff handling upright bass chores and Baker on tambourine for 1969's TELL THE WORLD. TELL THE WORLD was recorded in a single day with only producer Ray Tate supplementing the member instrumentation with some overdubbed lead guitar. The Dameans' subsequent releases utilized studio musicians for the most part with the Dameans contributions switching to mostly vocals.

Until entering the priesthood, the members were gone each weekend performing. It was this busy schedule and the travel far from his Wisconsin home Baker cited as his reason for departing in 1971. Gary Daigle joined the Dameans on keyboards and guitar about 1978, first appearing on REMEMBER YOUR LOVE.

In 2018, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reunion concert at Ursuline Academy Auditorium in New Orleans. All but Baker performed that night.
