Cindy And The Barbi Dolls

Cindy And The Barbi Dolls

Cindy And The Barbi Dolls has been played on NTS in shows including Perfect Sound Forever, featured first on 24 June 2020. Songs played include In Silence and The Reporter.

Never a band, more an exercise in getting a record made.

Jim was a record shop manager and Martin and Richard would regularly pester him to stock records they wanted to hear. At the time Steve was a student at medical school. Jim was the only real musican of the group and he put up the funds to pay for the recording session, recording the three songs that they had.

The recording session took place at Roche Studios. With most of the band not being proper musicians at the time the session proved at times challenging for some, with Martin Griffin from Roche stepping in to play one of the solo's due to tired fingers!

With enough songs recorded for a 7" a single was pressed up, the 'band' being names after a Big in Japan song. paying homage to the Desperate Bicycles the fold out cover includes details, including costs, of how the record was put together, and also listing the guitars but their colours, not their functions.

This was was the post-punk era and the era of the DIY indie band. No Cornish indie bands had been played by the hugely influencial John Peel at the time and the group would be the first. Peel played the record twice on Radio One and it was also played by Mike Reed on his show.

Martin and Richard took a suitcase full of records on the train to Small Wonder and Rough Trade in London who, much to their suprise, bought the lot.

As this was never a band as such there were no gigs and no follow ups.

Steve went back to college, and Jim stayed in Bodmin. Martin and Richard moved to London, with Richard working as a roadie/tour manager for Psychic TV and Jah Wobble, before a badly broken leg ended his career in music.
