Discostan w/ Korean Magpie Tapes
From Minangkabau psychedelic pop to disco-fied Thai folk and beyond, today's Radio Discostan presents a mix from @koreanmagpietapes (aka Geon), an immersion into the urban and rural spaces of Southeast Asia beautifully assembled to bring the listener into and through the spaces almost as if you were walking through them. Korean Magpie Tapes collects cassette tapes and vinyls with a focus on Southeast Asia, as well as AM/FM radio recordings and field recordings. Included in this mix are some of those materials that he has discovered while traveling in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and surrounding areas for the past months in particular. Style-wise they vary from melam to molam; from Minangkabau psychedelic pop to Lanna ceremonial drums; from Indonesian covers of the Bollywood classic “Man Dole Mera Tan Dole Mere” to ethnic Shan garage rock from Myanmar; from Sumatran chill-out to “disco-fied” Thai folk; from radio statics and glitches to insect chirping sounds.
Most of the tracks, if not all, were directly off of and/or recorded on tapes, which adds a layer of sonic texture for your listening pleasure.
