Freedom to Spend w/ Andrea Zarza

This programme is dedicated to all of the Yurok, Tolowa and Papago performers who appear in the following sound recordings and to the memory of Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018). In "Always Coming Home" (1985), Ursula K. Le Guin develops a fictional ethnography of an invented Pacific Coast peoples from a far distant time, the Kesh, survivors of an ecological catastrophe in Northern California. The book combines myth, storytelling, poetry and song to create a detailed ethnographic account of this culture including descriptions of their tools, instruments, recipes, rituals and dwellings. Early editions were published with an accompanying cassette, containing field recordings and indigenous songs in the Kesh language. This album was reissued in March 2018 by Freedom to Spend. This hour-long radio programme will play both the music of the Kesh and its influences; drawing on both historical and contemporary ethnographic and wildlife recordings to imagine what the world of the Kesh might have sounded like.
