On Great Southern Lands this month we are thrilled to present Celestial Houses, a deep and important excavation of Antipodean liturgical religious psychedelica curated by Naarm/Melbourne based label Left Ear Records. Far from the pews and rectors of the established organised churches, these songs of praise straddle Aquarian idealism, Christian rapture and pious fervor, reflecting the spirit of the burgeoning counterculture movement. With sounds that traverse hard-rock, psychedelic freak-outs, funk drenched stompers and soulful ablutions, the Jesus freaks found redemption in Scout Halls and communes, surreptitiously recording and releasing waves of obscure sermons bound for dollar bins, op shops, and internet oblivion. Turn on, tune in and drop out to the love of your higher power. Left Ear Records have been responsible for the re-issue of some of Australia/New Zealand’s forgotten peaks, including Poetical Licence, Rainbow Generator, Picture Music and Tester Housing – alongside other neglected or unreleased underground treasures. Their latest release gathers unearthed recordings from Asturian musician Jesus Ma Catalan’s Respuesta Alternativa project.
