Kudur Presents: Aysel Gürel

Berlin, 05.07.24

Trans/queer PoC collective Kudur dives into the musical world of Aysel Gürel, "one of the legends of Turkish popular music. Aysel Gürel, born in 1929 in Sarayköy, Denizli, was an iconic lyricist whose career spanned over forty years, leaving an indelible mark on the Turkish music scene. Despite her passing on February 17, 2008, her writing lives on, with her family discovering posthumous lyrics she had kept in trash bags. Gürel, who described herself as the subconscious of Turkish women, was more than a songwriter; she was a cultural icon who broke barriers and paved the way for future generations. Known for her outlandish style and the nickname 'Mad Aysel,' which she used as a shield, she remarked, "My lyrics are the voice of the collective heart, the unspoken truths of our society."
