Focus on Chalino Sánchez

A product of a tough & violent childhood in rural Mexico, Chilano Sanchez spent his young adulthood in a string of semi-legitimate and outright illegal lines of work, including smuggling people and drugs across the US / Mexico border. Around the same time Sanchez was sent to prison, his brother Armando was shot and killed. He wrote his first "corrido"—an emotional form of Spanish ballad—as a dedication to him. He continued writing at the request of fellow inmates, even following his release from prison. Eventually Sanchez was persuaded to start singing and performing his ballads, and became a cult artist in Mexico.

This hour long In Focus, is an emotional trip through Chalino Sanchez' heartfelt corridos. Compiled by Samuel Strang.
