In Focus: Khaled
The undisputed King of Raï music, an Algerian national hero, and an ambassador for Arabic music around the world, it's difficult to understate Khaled's impact on contemporary North African popular culture.
One of the first non-Western artists to find substantial commercial success during the first wave of "world music"'s popularity in Europe, Khaled's 1992 single "Didi" entered the charts in France, Belgium and Spain, as well as in East Asia and India. His popularity was partly due to his knack for hybridising traditional Arabic melodies and song structures with soul, reggae, and rock music.
