The Iraqi Maqam, the vocal urban tradition of Iraq, is considered the emblem of the country's ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. The centuries old tradition is a result of musical exchanges among Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, Assyrians and Jews, while its melodies and poetry were orally passed down through generations of masters.
