This second thematic mix for NTS explores the relationship between music and humour - an area which I have tended to neglect despite the comical potential of numerous musical works. In contrast to films or comical illustrations, it is easy to overlook the comical potential of numerous musical works. ‘Comedy Notes' showcases this union through the lyrics and verbal narratives of a track, as well as through the stylistic and conceptual processes that shape its humorous quality.
This collage-like mix offers a repertoire of various remarkable tracks in their singular treatment of humour, through both verbal and non-verbal examples (it includes a Mozart composition titled 'A Musical Joke’), zouglou ventriloquist-like performance, opéra-bouffes, multiple character "one-man songs", skiffles, covers as grotesque reinterpretations, noise experiments on the theme of comedy, Bhutan 'Pampin Tullal' performances as that appear to incorporate entertainment elements in the spiritual, hi-jacked karaoke classics or "nonsensical madrigals” (cf Ligeti)…
