Women of British Reggae: Sisters in Soundsystems

This episode focuses on the early beginnings of UK female-led sound systems from the ‘80s. Initially born of a necessity, “blues parties” were ad-hoc get togethers where Black young people could socialise and dance, free from the dominating atmosphere and discrimination of white social spaces. The parties were organised truly independently, right down to the sound systems, many of which were hand built by the organisers.

Featuring contributions, song selections and stories from June Rankin and DJ Ade a.k.a. Nzinga Sounds, Sista Culcha, and Sister Rasheda.
