San Francisco native Elan Kamesar’s first exposure to Brazilian music came when he was in college and he participated in ayahuasca ceremonies singing hymns in Portuguese. Shortly after he graduated he traveled to Brazil for the first time and spent six months learning the language, making friends and taking a deep dive into collecting the records. In the 20+ years that have followed, he has made frequent trips back, and has looked for records everywhere from São Paulo to the backwaters in the Amazon. For this radio transmission he makes selections that span the whole kaleidoscope of Brazilian rhythms, periods, and regions.
