Violeta Parra is a national Icon in Chile, and the country celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this month. The mix features selections from mostly her earlier LPs of Chilean folksong, one of which I'm reissuing and will be out in a couple of weeks. She was a visual artist, embroiderer, musician and an ethnomusicologist who scoured the country collecting tradition songs. She sadly committed suicide in 1967, but the legacy of her art and folksong remains very strong.
