Discostan w/ Zenaan-Khaana

Los Angeles, 18.09.24

Zenaan-Khana creates visibility around the marginalization of trans and alternative-ishq (love) practicing Pakistanis through trans-led cultural production. In a cultural climate that harshly censors trans-thought, it has become a political project striving to radically liberate queer/trans bodies through subversive artivist strategies. Structurally, the collective is co-led by a team of multidisciplinary artists including photographers, stylists, musicians, makeup artists, videographers and fashion designers. Currently, their efforts have been focused on tapping into public performance-art and safer nightlife spaces to repair Lahore’s fragmented and class-segregated queer/trans social fabric, and on dance and music to facilitate a celebratory and spiritual transcendence that naturally occurs when hundreds of queer/trans bodies occupy a space curated to empower the expression of there identities.

Zenaan-Khana is pushing soundscapes that defy the country’s current mainstream music scene. Their mixes are experimental and post-club, filled with live edits that capture a growing urban, queer, and gen-Z sentiment to resist and reimagine culture in Pakistan. This mix for discostan positions some of the collective’s favorite femme-classics from the subcontinent into an alternative sonic space; one that parallels the queer mania familiar to Pakistan’s current scene-kids.
