Discostan w/ Bast
Los Angeles, 08.04.20
Radio Discostan is excited to present a glowing throwback mix from Bast out of Delhi: "Lately with everything going on globally and at home in Delhi, I've been struggling to find a shred of hope, laughter or joy. This mix is a selection of vintage Bollywood and indie pop, disco tracks from the 80's 90's that took me back to my living room, having dance competitions with my sister & the kids in my neighborhood and being in absolute awe of the womxn I saw on screen and in real life. Hope this takes you on your own journey."
Bast is the moniker embodied by Delhi based artist & DJ Akriti Niti Guha. Music has been an integral part of Guha’s life and they intend to bring their genre fluid persona to inspire the dance floor. Their favorite genres include downtempo, chill, psydub, disco, acid house, techno, psytrance and dark prog. Their main sound revolves around a more fluidic, psychedelic, progressive and sometimes even a manic experience.
The name Bast comes from the cat god of protection, music and dance. Their sets are fluid and bring ecstatic energy to the dancefloor. Guha likes to consider themselves as someone who is just like the lion-headed beast that transforms into a cat-headed womxn. The transformation from lion to cat is Bast moving from wild power to something more gentle; quite in sync with their namesake Bast who likes to play around with something moody, fluid, and erratic.
Bast has curated and performed at various underground, DIY and queer parties in Delhi and works with a close knit community of queer folks called Dragery, to exlore gender, identity, desire, through the form of Drag. Dragery hopes to push for more queer visibilty in mainstream nightlife. Bast has also opened for Queer Futures Potluck Party at Goethe Institute, Boxout Wednesdays and legendary artists like Jennifer Cardini, youANDme, Ouissam and Rifain.
