New Zealand guitarist Roy Montgomery's music was once described by NPR journalist Lars Gotrich as "swimming through phantoms" – it may sound like an overwrought analogy at first, but simply spend half an hour enveloped in Montgomery's tones, and you'll understand.
Originally a part of Pin Group in the 1980s, releasing Joy Division-indebted post-punk on the revered Wellington label Flying Nun records, Montgomery eventually unmoored himself from the strictures of verse-chorus-verse songwriting, and other musicians entirely, composing drifting, gauzy guitar instrumentals that channeled his own personal grief and loneliness into a seductively baleful magic.
In his bedroom, Kanii learned how to turn his voice into magic. The 18-year-old artist and singer from Washington, D.C., who started out making music just feet from where he slept, spent his childhood dabbling in various recording software and capturing his brilliant voice. With an alchemical combination of club rhythms, sticky pop melodies, and a post-everything approach to maximal electronic music, he’s already shown his brilliance to millions around the world. His debut exiit EP is out now via Masked Records/Warner Records; an eight-track project that illuminates his enigmatic signature style at a nexus between uncontainable club energy and sky-scraping pop palatability.
