While the rest of their electronic music contemporaries in the late 1990s reached for dancefloor ecstacy and big room bombast, French duo Air paved an influential path with a more delicate and atmospheric sound. Taking inspiration from old school film composers and vintage synthesiser wizards like Burt Bacharach, Isao Tomita and Vangelis, they shot to success with a distinct sonic world. As I began to conceptualize what I wanted this mix to pull out of its listeners, it became clear that this mix’s purpose was to encompass the very visceral pain and beauty that takes place in the wake of healing from grief inflicted by heartbreak. From sounds of sirens and swimming desperately trying to catch breath to guttural bass and trance-like melodies, this mix is for everyone who knows the vortex of heartbreak all too well.
