As someone who has a great interest in music, especially music that would be considered fun(ny) and experimental, I have been trying to implement this into many of my live and recorded mixes. Growing up in the Caribbean, while now living in the cold Netherlands, I've been trying to find sounds that are similar to the sounds used in Caribbean music to not only battle my homesickness, but also to appreciate these sounds even more. This collection of songs embraces the many sounds that are similar to those sounds heard in the Caribbean, such as dembow and reggeaton elements, but also the other sounds that I enjoy listening to while living in Europe, such as ghetto-tech and happy hardcore. You could say that these songs bring me a lot of JOY!!!!

Kelvin Brown Soul Music Special w/ Alan Darker & Philip Wainwright

For an all Soul music special this month Kelvin Brown is joined by two of Manchester’s deepest record collectors: Phil Wainwright and Alan Darker, who’s collections chart the rarest reaches of northern soul, ‘70s, modern soul, boogie and disco.

Both were were serious collectors in the days before eBay and Discogs, when digging involved the numerous trips around the United States in search of rare soul records through the 1980’s and 90’s. Along the way Phil bought records from the likes Underground Resistance founder “Mad” Mike Banks and unearthed the sort of records that now change hands for small fortunes.

Between them they’ve manned the decks at all dayers, all nighters and more around the country. Alan, originally an attendee of lauded Northern Soul nights like The Wigan Casino, had the dubious honour of regularly serving as DJ for legendary Manchester post-punk band The Fall.
