The Joy of Blissing Out W/ Emily E

This mix explores the joy that’s produced by what is sustained - through guitar pedals, drones, drum patterns, feedback, and distortion. It finds hope bubbling up from a variety of genres and noise patterns - from shoegaze, to drum and bliss, to blackgaze and experimental. These sounds encourage us to hold on, to keep applying pressure, and to stay with what might at first sound hard.

Experimental Classical

Barnaby Bennett & guest Laura Reid explore the work groundbreaking classical composer Olivier Messiaen.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a groundbreaking composer who was revolutionary in his approach to Classical music, incorporating wide ranging sound influences, from birdsong to new technology. A synaesthete and devout Catholic, his music is immersive, spiritual, and spellbinding. This is a collection of pieces put together by the composer's second wife, pianist Yvonne Loriod, after Olivier's death and published in 2001. Finally, we end the episode with recordings of Messiaen himself playing excerpts from his composition Nativité Du Seigneur, written in 1935. These are three movements out of the nine "meditations" he wrote reflecting on the birth of Jesus.
