In the centuries after her death, Sappho (630 – c. 570 BC) was regarded as the greatest of lyric poets, the ‘tenth muse’. All that remains of her work are fragments of Papyrus, found at Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. While these contain one complete poem, they are mostly incomplete lines and single words. Here, poet Anne Carson’s translation of Sappho is sifted, recombined and fragmented further.
