Focus on Vagif Mustafa Zadeh
Azerbaijani jazz has never known a figure on the same scale as Vagif Mustafazadeh - a pioneering pianist and composer who created the jazz-mugham style, a unique synthesis of Azerbaijani folk music with jazz. His distinctively lyrical way of playing attracted top musicians from all over the USSR to Baku to jam with him. In 1979, at the age of just 39, Mustafazadeh died of a heart attack after performing in Tashkent. His daughter Aziza, who was 9 years old at the time, follows his footsteps as an acclaimed pianist, composer and singer fusing jazz and mugham.
