Who's That Girl? - Pillow TalkLondon
Leyla’s show is undoubtedly of the most intricately put together on the station - so much work goes into each episode, and her ‘Pillow Talk’ special really hit that home. It featured a chatline bling skit mix, which flipped Hotline Bling on its head and re-imagined nineties hip-hop interludes, intros and phone-ins into something much, much more sensual.
The M'n'M Show w/ AG, Trim & Nico LindsayLondon
A.G’s M’n’M show is always on a mad one - guests for the M’n’M show this year have included Trim, Nico Lindsay, P Money, Flowdan, Spooky Bizzle and Jammz, amongst others. This session with Trim and Nico Lindsay was a stand-out, with flips of the Countdown theme, phone-ins and heat abound.
Sega Bodega's Soundtrack SeriesLondon
Trust in Sega Bodega to have Moleman, Profokiev, Arca and some of the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack all in one episode. Creating luscious soundscapes out of found footage, classical, experimental electronic and video game soundtracks - all in a day’s work.
Pipe Down!London
R.I.P, Pipe Down, 2011-2016. After a solid half decade of high calibre shows on the station, 2016 saw the much-lamented end of Pipe Down. This episode from May saw Otis lay down a burning mix of psych, industrial, soul and other freaked out sounds, finishing his run on top form.
Do!! You!!! Breakfast w/ Charlie Bones - Prince TributeLondon
A lot of shitty things happened in 2016, and Prince’s passing was high up on the list. The fact that Charlie broadcast one of his best ever Do!! You!!! Breakfast shows the following morning was perhaps the only suitable tonic for the death of such genius.
GUESTS
Autechre
The iconic techno-noise duo Autechre brought a brilliant one-off guest show at the beginning of the year. Their mix was brilliantly abrasive, playing classic industrial and experimental artists such as Delia Derbyshire and Throbbing Gristle, as well as a freakish flip of the James Bond theme by the Fenn O’ Berg (the collaborative improvisational trio numbering Peter Rehberg, Christian Fennesz and Jim O’Rourke).
Larry Heard
The deep house instigator Larry Heard, a.k.a Mr Fingers, played his first live show in over 20 years at Dimensions festival this year - to have him bless the NTS airwaves with an hour and a half of expertly-mixed house was an undeniable honour.
J.A.W. Presents: Amila Paris
We helped the Parisian soul and jazz collective J.A.W. celebrate their tenth anniversary with a series of one-off guest shows. Amila’s seductive and soulful ninety minute trip through ambient and spiritual jazz numbers got our collective ear-drums humming.
SUNN O))) - Live From Unsound Toronto Toronto
Stephen O’Malley had a productive year at NTS - not only did he handle the June residency, but took part in our Unsound Toronto series, transmitting a ninety minute SUNN O))) concert from the Hearn Generating Station. Could there be a more fitting setting for SUNN O)))’s primal and apocalyptic drone metal than a decommissioned oil-combusting power plant? Probably not.
Nina Kraviz London
Having Nina Kraviz on the air was a real pleasure - she talks listeners through killer selections such as experimental works from Karlheinz Stockhausen, vintage beats from J. Dilla, the infamous Muslimgauze and some ripping Russian psych.
