Old friends and hapless mavericks Ivan Smagghe and Nathan Gregory Wilkins present a fortnightly window into their ramshackle musical world. A show with absolutely no rules (as they'd only break them). We love the unmixable, old & new. We are oddballs and we love you.

Champeta on Cassette is a selection of rare, unreleased, and instrumental tracks that are essential to Cartagena’s champetúa culture. Producers like Raúl "Romy" Molina handed their music directly to picó owners, allowing fans to feel and learn the tracks before their official release. Cassettes were the pulse of Bazurto’s market and the underground bootlegging scene. This mix revives that raw, magnetic energy.

Machinefabriek

On 21 June 2016, Machinefabriek was a guest on Fractal Meat On A Spongy Bone. Machinefabriek has been played on NTS over 20 times, featured on 22 episodes and was first played on 19 April 2013.

Rutger Zuydervelt was born on 28 July 1978 in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands), but now resides in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He started working as Machinefabriek in 2004. The name (meaning ‘machine factory’) was on the façade of a building Rutger passed everytime he went shopping for groceries. Except for a few piano and guitar lessons when he was young, Rutger didn’t study music. Instead, he graduated as a graphic designer. The sleeves of his releases are practically always designed by Rutger himself, being a crucial part of the music.

Machinefabriek’s music combines elements of ambient, modern classical, minimalism, drone and field recordings. His pieces unfold as ‘films without image’, with a sharp ear for detail. After releasing a series of self released CD-Rs, the official debut, ‘Marijn’, was issued by Lampse in 2006. Since then a solid stream of singles and albums was released on labels like Type, 12K, Spekk, Dekorder, Digitalis, Experimedia and Staalplaat.

Performing live has been an important expression for Machinefabriek. He took his gear to Russia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Switserland, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Turkey and England. Rutger collaborated (on record and/or live) with numerous artists, such as Ralph Steinbrüchel, Aaron Martin, Peter Broderick, Frans de Waard, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Xela, Simon Scott, Steve Roden, Gareth Davis and Tim Caitlin amongst others.

Rutger also works with various visual artists. He scored music for dance pieces, films, video installations and sculptures. These cross-disciplinary collaborations are something Machinefabriek will focus on more and more.
